Understand the service

What does professional upholstery cleaning involve?

A specialist normally inspects the furniture, identifies the upholstery type, vacuums loose soil and tests an inconspicuous area. The selected process may then use hot-water extraction, a low-moisture treatment, dry solvent cleaning or a dedicated leather-cleaning system.

The goal is to remove suitable surface and embedded soil without causing colour loss, shrinkage, texture change or excess moisture. The safest method depends on the fibre, backing, fillings, dyes, construction and previous treatments.

Professional upholstery cleaning can improve everyday dirt, marks and odours. An inspection helps your cleaner choose a suitable method and explain the expected result for your fabric.

Method comparison

The material determines the cleaning method

Hot-water extraction

A cleaning solution and controlled hot water are applied, agitated where suitable and extracted with suspended soil. This is commonly used for many synthetic, mixed and some wool fabrics.

Check: drying time, ventilation and whether the backing and fillings tolerate moisture.

Low-moisture or dry cleaning

Moisture-sensitive textiles such as some velvet, silk, suede or delicate blends may need a specialist low-moisture or solvent-based process.

Check: the technician’s experience with the exact textile; “dry clean” is not one universal treatment.

Leather care

Leather requires identification, patch testing and products intended for its finish. Cleaning may be followed by a suitable conditioner or protector.

Do not assume: cracks, colour loss, peeling bonded leather or worn coatings can be restored by cleaning.

BISSELL SpotClean Pro

A portable wet-cleaning option for small spills and localised marks on suitable upholstery and car interiors. Use only where the manufacturer’s care instructions permit wet cleaning; do not use on S/dry-clean-only or delicate or unidentified fabrics.

Commonly included

  • Inspection and an appropriate spot test
  • Vacuuming of accessible upholstery
  • Pre-treatment of suitable marks
  • Cleaning using the agreed method
  • Extraction or finishing appropriate to the textile
  • Basic advice on drying and aftercare

Often separate or excluded

  • Loose cushions not counted in the quotation
  • Stain protection and deodorising treatments
  • Curtains, rugs, carpets and mattresses
  • Antique, silk, velvet, suede and specialist textiles

  • Guaranteed removal of every stain or odour

Important: removable cushion covers should not be machine-washed simply because they have a zip. Follow the manufacturer’s care label and ask whether separate cover cleaning is included.

Budget guide

How much does upholstery cleaning cost?

One provider’s published standard London rates offer a useful real-market example. They are not national averages and do not replace a postcode-specific quote.

Armchair

Published example: £32

Method, textile and minimum service charge can change the payable total.

Two-seat sofa

Published example: £66

L-shaped furniture and extra sections may be priced by seat at a higher total.

Dining chair

Published example: £10

Ask whether the seat only, seat and back, or all upholstered surfaces are covered.

Mattress

Published example: £35

Size, sides cleaned, treatment and longer drying time must be confirmed.

Price note: Indicative September 2026 examples from Fantastic Cleaners for areas within the M25. Their listed non-member minimum charge is £68. Availability, fabric, method, location, add-ons, VAT and congestion charges can change the total.

A stain is not always removable soil

Bleach marks, sun fading, dye loss, abrasion, burns and fabric wear are changes to the material. Cleaning may reveal them more clearly but cannot replace missing colour or repair damaged fibres.

Old treatments can also set a stain, alter the dye or leave residues. Tell the technician exactly what was applied.

Practical MV Cleaning insight

Show the complete item and every loose cushion

A customer may describe a “three-seat sofa” without mentioning a chaise, detachable headrests, scatter cushions or upholstered sides and back. Those details change the work and the price.

Send one full photograph, separate images of stains and a clear care-label image. State whether pets use the item, whether there is an odour and what cleaning products have already been tried.

This gives the provider a better chance to identify exclusions, select the right method and bring the correct treatment before arriving.

Plan for drying and safe use

Allow enough time

Wet-cleaned upholstery may need roughly four to eight hours. Mattresses can require twelve to twenty-four hours, depending on moisture, airflow, temperature and construction.

Create airflow

Follow the provider’s advice on ventilation, heating and air movers. Avoid placing loose cushions flat against one another while they are damp.

Keep it unused

Do not sit, sleep, replace covers or allow pets onto treated furniture until the technician confirms it is dry enough for normal use.

How to compare upholstery-cleaning providers

  • Ask how the material and care code will be identified.
  • Confirm the proposed method and patch-testing process.
  • List every seat, cushion, side, back and extra item.
  • Request realistic expectations for each stain and odour.
  • Check insurance and the damage-reporting process.
  • Get the complete price and exclusions in writing.

A clear quote should state

  • Every included furniture item and surface
  • Cleaning and stain-treatment method
  • Protector, deodoriser and other add-ons
  • Total price, VAT and minimum charge
  • Expected drying time and aftercare

Upholstery cleaning FAQs

Can every stain be removed?

No. Results depend on the substance, age, fabric, dye and previous treatment. Permanent colour loss, wear, burns and chemical damage are not removable dirt.

How long does a sofa take to dry?

Wet-cleaned upholstery commonly needs several hours. A practical allowance is around four to eight hours, while mattresses can take longer. Follow the technician’s advice for the actual item.

Is steam cleaning suitable for every sofa?

No. “Steam cleaning” is often used informally for hot-water extraction, but delicate and moisture-sensitive fabrics may require a different specialist method.

Are loose cushions included?

Not necessarily. Show and count seat cushions, back cushions, headrests and scatter cushions separately so the provider can price the complete job.

Can upholstery cleaning remove pet odours?

It can improve suitable odours, but contamination may have reached fillings or the furniture frame. Ask what treatment is included and whether the source can be fully reached.
