How to remove pet urine stains and smell from carpet

Fresh urine should be absorbed quickly. Old or recurring odour is harder because contamination can move below the carpet surface into backing or underlay, where surface cleaning alone may not solve it.

DO NOW
Blot and press with clean white absorbent towels to remove as much liquid as possible.

DO NOT
Do not scrub, flood the carpet or use ammonia-based household cleaner.

CHECK FIRST
Identify the fibre and whether the urine may have reached the backing or underlay.

Four-step guide to blot and treat pet urine on carpet with enzyme cleaner

Safe step-by-step method

1. Absorb fresh urine immediately

Press clean white towels firmly onto the area and replace them as they become damp. Avoid rubbing because this can spread contamination and distort the pile.

2. Check the carpet and the size of the problem

Look for a care label or manufacturer guidance if available. Wool and other sensitive fibres need fibre-safe chemistry. A large, repeated or old accident is more likely to have reached the backing or underlay.

3. Use a urine-specific product that suits the fibre

For odour problems, an enzyme-based or urine-specific carpet treatment is more appropriate than simply adding fragrance. Follow the label exactly. If the carpet is wool, choose a WoolSafe-approved product or another treatment specifically approved for that carpet.

4. Do not over-wet the area

More liquid is not automatically better. Excess moisture can move contamination deeper, affect backing and lengthen drying. Use only the amount required by the product instructions and extract or blot excess moisture where the method allows.

5. Let the carpet dry completely and reassess

Ventilate the room and keep people and pets off the treated area while it dries. If the smell returns once the carpet is dry, contamination may remain below the visible surface.

What not to do

  • Do not use ammonia-based cleaner.
  • Do not scrub aggressively.
  • Do not flood the carpet or underlay.
  • Do not mix enzyme treatments with other chemicals unless the product instructions say they are compatible.
  • Do not assume fragrance means the contamination has been removed.
  • Do not repeatedly wet an old urine area if the smell keeps returning.

BISSELL SpotClean C5 Pet

A compact cleaner for fresh, small, surface-level pet accidents on wet-clean-compatible carpet and suitable upholstery. It cannot treat contamination that has reached the carpet backing, underlay or subfloor; recurring odour needs professional assessment.

Why the smell can come back

The stain is deeper than it looks

Urine can move through the pile into backing and underlay. Cleaning only the visible surface may leave the odour source behind.

Old residues can react with moisture

The NCCA notes that dried urine residues can smell again when they become damp. A recurring smell after humidity or cleaning is a warning that deeper treatment may be needed.

Wool needs extra care

Use products suitable for wool. WoolSafe lists urine and odour treatments that have passed its carpet-care testing.

When to stop DIY

  • The smell returns after the carpet is fully dry.
  • The accident is old, repeated or covers a large area.
  • The backing or underlay is likely to be contaminated.
  • The carpet is wool, viscose, sisal, silk or a valuable rug and you are unsure of the treatment.
  • Colour transfers during testing or the pile changes texture.
  • You have already used several products and do not know what residues remain.
